Get the most out of Tummy Time
Tummy time is a great way to help baby co-ordinate and develop strength. As the latest research shows that in order to help prevent SIDS, baby should always be put on their backs to sleep. This means that time spent laying in this position has increased, leading to many more cases of cranial asymetrey (mishapen or flat areas on the back of the head) and a general increase in the average time it takes to meet large motor milestones. Having some tummy time every day is essential for baby's development for a variety of reasons. Time spent playing in this position strengthens all baby's muscles - a perfect mini-workout! Arms grasp and little legs kick, preparing them for rolling, crawling and standing and providing a sound basis for co-ordination, balance and posture.
Often younger babies may not seem to enjoy being on their tummy, so holding baby against your chest as you recline is a good place to start. Its best to start with a few minutes at a time, read your baby's cues and see when they've had enough. It helps if baby is calm, well rested and not hungry before you start - an upset baby does not make for happy tummy time! As baby's strength develops a little a soft padded playmat on the floor is a great option to help protect baby from bumping themselves with any jerky movements. When baby begins to get stronger and can hold their head up a little, tummy time starts getting more fun!
One of the best things for successful tummy time is you! Lay down with baby and sing, play and encourage. Colorful and interesting toys with texture, squeakers and jingles all make for fun tummy time too. Soon there will be no stopping your little 'rug bug' as they explore the world around them!
